Research and development in Building Acoustics

The working group “Building Acoustics” investigates the acoustic properties of building products (building components and building systems). The objective is to optimize the acoustic quality of the complex systems of our customers by means of a targeted development to achieve conditions allowing for an excellent sound protection in the building. The ideal measure of constructional sound insulation is one of the important conditions for sustainable building construction, influencing both comfort and well-being in residential building, and the performance and health in commercial building. On the other hand, there are costs and efforts to be taken into account. Thus, thorough planning and effective execution are the keys to achieving the objective, especially as subsequent improvements of the acoustic properties of a building are usually uneconomically or even impossible.

Furthermore, the building acoustics group carries out sound insulation analyses within the urban building context. Here, again, planning is extremely relevant and presents a particular challenge within the interaction between politics, environment and society.

For the targeted, application-oriented research more than 20 acoustic laboratories and test facilities are available, as well as a multitude of measuring methods.

In order to verify the efficiency of building products, the working group operates an independent accredited test laboratory serving as an interface between research, industry and building practice in the technical fields of work:

Improvement of the sound insulation of stud walls at low frequencies

Plasterboard stud walls can be manufactured quickly and cost-effectively, and they can easily be removed again, if required. Also with regard to structural noise protection, stud walls can be recognized as being equivalent to solid walls.

 

Ventilation without noise - Acoustic window control

In future, people affected by noise emissions will be relieved. Sensor-controlled windows, which are opened automatically if ventilation requirement is detected by sensors, have been enhanced by a new function: the "ear close to the window". Once a certain noise level has been reached outside the building, the window is closed automatically.

 

Active vibration isolation for building technology systems

A particularly disturbing group of noise sources in buildings is caused by building service installations such as heating and ventilation systems, elevators and numerous water and sanitary installations. 

 

Adhesives and sealants with sound insulating properties

The acoustic behavior of adhesives and sealants has been marginalized so far, even though joint sealings and adhesive joints, especially of building service installations, present important sound transmission paths. 

 

Effects and evaluations of the impact sound of wooden floors

Good neighborhood relations are in danger if the desired level of silence cannot be achieved when closing the front door. One of the main reasons for this is the transmission of noise coming from the apartment above. Within the European research project ACUWOOD, acousticians and psychologists investigated the impact sound evaluation in detail. 

 

Plants as noise control

Aim of this study was to investigate which plants are particularly suited for sound insulation purposes from an acoustic point of view, how they should be planted, which dimensions a hedge should have and how further influencing factors such as vegetation density, surface, form and thickness of leafs, etc. affect the acoustic properties. 

 

Inflatable membrane elements

There are to date no efficient and economic measures to shield temporary neighborhood noise. In addition, this noise can reach high volumes and is changing continually. 

 

Acoustics of membrane structures

Due to several prestigious buildings, such as the “Allianz-Arena“ in Munich, membranes now are recognized as a distinct construction material allowing to create complete building envelopes.

Test Laboratories

The building acoustics test laboratory is recognized by the German Institute for Building Technology (DIBt) as an approved Group I testing center authorized to carry out the full range of performance and quality tests according to DIN 4109.
