Software for practice

The calculation of structure and building component behaviour under various aspects of building physics requires a profound specialized knowledge. A continuous validation of the programs is necessary during and after the development of software tools for calculation.
Experience and adequate experimental equipment are prerequisites. The Fraunhofer Institute of Building Physics IBP developed and continuously administers software from this point of view.

ADELINE - Daylight and artificial light simulations

Calculation of indoor and outdoor lighting conditions.

The design tool package ADELINE (Advanced Day- and Electric Lighting Integrated New Environment) was developed over the course of several research projects run by the International Energy Agency (IEA). It can be used to solve a wide range of tasks that are typically encountered in the planning of daylight and electrical lighting conditions. ADELINE can be applied to both simple spaces and the most complex buildings. The software package includes the programs SUPERLITE and RADIANCE for lighting simulation tasks and SUPERLINK and RADLINK for the interaction between daylight, artificial lighting and overall building dynamic thermal performance. The results of the simulations allow users to compile information on:

  • candlepower distribution curves, daylight factor profiles,
  • luminance and calculation of illuminance on component surfaces
  • visual comfort,
  • the energy required to guarantee the stilpulated level of illumination and
  • the annual number of hours when natural daylight can be used and the operating hours of the electric lightning system.

compas - Computation of Absorptive Silencers



The program performs calculations based on the theory of sound propagation in lined absorbent ducts with superimposed flow:

  • Propagation loss Lp in the splitter airway passage of width 2s and length Lk
  • Reflection loss Lr at the splitter entry and exit

The sum of these two attenuation parts results in insertion loss Li of the silencer as it is measured on the test stand according to EN ISO 7235. The theoretical propagation loss of long silencers is generally not achievable in practice due to the stimulation, propagation and radiation of structure borne noise in the splitters. This influence is accounted for by an empirical correction Lp* on the calculated propagation loss. The influence of superimposed flow and temperature on the propagation loss is taken into account in the program’s calculations.  The program also calculates the pressure loss and the sound power of the flow noise as well as the energy costs incurred by the silencer. The integrated design tool makes it easy to determine the geometry of the silencer taking into account duct cross-section and volume flow.

Desktop Triso - Calculation of Thermal Bridges

Desktop Triso

Representation of surfaces of identical temperatures in a building component.


The WINTRISO software program calculates temperatures and heat flow in complex building component interfaces and thermal bridges. Model input is established by entering parameters or tracing a graphical model. The model can then be calculated in two or three dimensions. The program allows users to define boundary conditions in the form of adiabatic connections, constant temperatures and heat sources, and temperatures and heat sources that vary over time. The graphical output allows users to make interactive changes to the direction of view, as well as to the depicted component cross-sections and simulation variables.

EnEVnet - Internet-Based Information and Design Tool

EnEVnet Logo

EnEV net.de opens up access to a whole new method of exchanging information on the requirements of the German Energy Conservation Regulations (EnEV). Even without specific expertise in this area, visitors to the website can use the calculation services provided to quickly investigate the savings potential outlined in the EnEV. The Internet-based calculation services enable users to

  • present the physical function and performance of products included in the EnEV,
  • highlight specific products' energy features and properties, and
  • obtain professional and competent customer support.

The tool allows the assessment of all building energy shares such as energy need, energy use and primary energy. Detailed input for usage zones, lighting zones, building components, solar shading, heating, ventilation, cooling and lighting systems, energy carriers, etc. Different variants can be compared and an energy certificate can be printed. Detailed energy consulting is possible as well.

The calculation core is the IBP18599kernel which is used in about half of the computer tools for calculations according to DIN V 18599.

IMEDAS - Internet Measurement and Data Evaluation System

IMEDAS

IMEDAS™ is a software system for the acquisition, transfer, processing and storage of measurements which was developed at the Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics IBP in Holzkirchen. Two of its most impressive features are its Internet capabilities and the holistic approach it employs for measurement tasks. It is especially suitable for world-wide distributed long-term measurements involving a large number of data channels.

Leso-DIAL – A simple daylighting design tool

Leso-DIAL

Leso-DIAL was developed to give architects information on the use of artificial lighting from a very early stage of the planning process. Leso-DIAL calculates the quantity of available daylight and makes predictions regarding daylight autonomy (the time during which artificial lighting can be switched off). Based on this data, the program uses fuzzy logic rules to diagnose the daylight design and suggest improvements. Leso-DIAL is an extremely user-friendly tool with a minimal learning curve which does not require any specialist knowledge. User input primarily consists of selecting example graphics using the mouse. The program calculates the results rapidly, making it easy to compare multiple variants. A dictionary is included to help users with any unfamiliar terms by providing simple explanations and numerous illustrations.

NOise Reduction Auralisation / only in German

NOise Reduction Auralisation

Auralisation, also die rechnerische Hörbarmachung akustischer Vorgänge, kann die Wirkung schalltechnischer Maßnahmen eindringlicher aufzeigen als eine Vielzahl von Kennwerten. Bereits im Planungsstadium kann das Verhalten verschiedener Bauteile bei unterschiedlichen Anregegeräuschen (Straßen- oder Flugverkehr) dem Ohr dargeboten werden. Kraft eigenen Gehörs kann der Kunde, aber auch der Planer und Hersteller die akustische Qualität des Bauteils beurteilen. Mittels des PC-basierten Echtzeitauralisationssystems NOise Reduction Auralisation können verschiedene Bauteile, z.B. Schallschutzfenster, auralisiert werden. Neben der werbewirksamen Präsentation der akustischen Qualität von Bauteilen bietet die Auralisation dem Bauteilehersteller vor allem die Möglichkeit sich bereits während der Entwicklung anzuhören, wie das fertige Produkt wirken wird. Und der Kunde muß sich bei seiner Kaufentscheidung nicht mehr nur auf Kennwerte verlassen, deren Bedeutung für das akustische Wohlbefinden selbst dem Fachmann nicht immer geläufig sind, sondern kann sich aufgrund seines Hörerlebnisses eine Meinung bilden.

Maske zur Eingabe der Luftschalleigenschaften der Bauteile.

Das Programm wurde erstellt, um zu zeigen, wie eine Berechnung der Luft- bzw. Trittschallübertragung nach dem frequenzabhängigen Modell der Arbeitsgruppe 2 des Technischen Komitees 126 des CEN erfolgen könnte (europäischer Normentwurf EN 12354, Teile 1 und 2, Version N111 und N112). Das Programm ist nicht zum Einsatz in der Beratung gedacht. Daher wurden wesentliche Funktionen, wie Druckerausgaben der Ergebnisse oder Ergänzbarkeit des Bauteilekataloges, nicht implementiert. Die Gebäudegeometrie wurde auf zwei horizontale oder vertikal benachbarte Quaderräume beschränkt. Die Arbeiten an diesem Programm, das über das IRB bezogen werden kann, wurden vom Deutschen Institut für Bautechnik finanziert.

WUFI – Calculation of the coupled heat and moisture transfer in building components

 

WUFI is a menu-driven computer program designed for calculating coupled heat and moisture transfer in multi-layered building components under natural climate conditions. It is based on the latest findings in regard to vapor diffusion and liquid transport.

  • WUFI is a tool for developing and optimizing building materials and components.
  • WUFI can be used to determine the drying time of trapped moisture in masonry construction,
    • the risk of interstitial condensation,
    • the hygrothermal performance of roof and wall assemblies in the event of a change in use or in different climate zones,
    • the effects of driving rain on exterior building components, and
    • the effects of renovation and redevelopment.
