Preserving Pompeii with research

Each point on the map that marks famous and irreplaceable historical monuments is an indication of their importance to the present. We must preserve and protect these monuments! Under the leadership of Fraunhofer IBP a few world-famous and prestigious research institutions are cooperating within the POMPEII SUSTAINABLE PRESERVATION PROJECT in order to realize a conservation project that gives a long-term perspective to important monuments in Pompeii, trains young talents and promotes research in several fields.

Ground-based test flights – The Flight Test Facility

In the Flight Test Facility, you are 13,000 feet above sea level, but on the ground. This works in the Flight Test Facility of the Fraunhofer IBP, thanks to a low-pressure chamber, which was built at the front of an Airbus A310. The result was a unique flight laboratory, which examines the impact of indoor climate, air quality and acoustics to passengers and crew. The Thermal Test Bench enables the Fraunhofer scientists and their industrial partners to expand the scope of their research activities.

The inaugurated building had been the winner of an open interdisciplinary design competition. The Fraunhofer Building Innovation Alliance and the Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics IBP in particular were involved in the competition concerning scientific research from the very beginning. This Institute will now perform accompanying measurements and research projects in the inhabited and uninhabited building over a period of two years. (Published: 05/2012)
