Pioneering concepts for urban spaces are analyzed and further developed in the Sustainable City/Urban District Development research unit.

Various concepts in the urban fields of energy, buildings, mobility, and production jointly undergo innovative ongoing development in the research field »Sustainable Urban Systems and Urban Quarter Development.« At the focus here are life cycle-based design and optimization, along with corresponding assessment models for the urban systems and technologies of the future. These are accompanied by the further development of quantitative and qualitative indicators and of suitable tools for assessment in the areas of economy, ecology, and social issues. The Working Group on Sustainable Construction supports the appropriate, future-oriented development of the urban spaces of tomorrow from the viewpoint of a wide range of sustainability aspects and supports the development of integral solutions from a systems perspective.

Additional involvement takes the form of cooperation in the Life Cycle Assessment Expert Group of the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB) and in the corresponding working groups for urban, industrial, and commercial quarters.
