The moisture laboratory at Fraunhofer IBP can determine a wide range of material properties.

Reliable and competent assessment of diverse material characteristics

Our moisture laboratory is flexibly accredited by the Deutsche Akkreditierungsstelle GmbH (DAkkS) according to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025. This proves the competence of our staff and the quality of our facilities in determining a wide range of material properties.

Among others, we assess:

  • water vapor diffusion parameters
  • capillary water absorption
  • reference moisture content of sorption isotherms and moisture storage functions
  • capillary transport coefficients
  • bulk density, true density and porosity
  • thermal and hygric length changes

As a result, we are able to determine all the hygric properties of a material (i.e. those related to moisture and precipitation), which in turn can be used to perform hygrothermal simulations with WUFI® (program for determining the coupled transport of heat and moisture in building components).

Within the scope of research projects, our researchers also adapt and develop techniques, such as a standardized method for assessing the drying behavior of building materials, or for determining the capillary transport coefficients of capillary-active insulating materials (capi test).
