Quanderland – The Innovation Accelerator for Climate-Positive Quantum Technology and Photonic System Solutions

Quanderland acts as an enabler of photonic and quantum technology solutions for sustainability challenges.

Welcome to Quanderland – the innovation accelerator for sustainable solutions in photonics and quantum technologies.

The project combines innovation, technology, and sustainability in a unique research network, designed to make quantum technologies tangible, application-oriented, and future-proof. In addition to fostering new cooperation formats for idea development and rapid prototyping, the project emphasizes the robust investigation of ecological, social, and economic aspects of the applications, as well as the added value that these technologies can deliver.

Fraunhofer IBP plays a central role in evaluating the potential of the investigated approaches and supports all joint projects in this funding program with expertise in life cycle assessment and sustainability evaluation.

Project goals

The Quanderland project aims to identify and realize the innovation potential of photonics and quantum technologies as key technologies for future sustainability applications, working within a network of various stakeholders from science, industry, and society. Close cooperation within this network aims to accelerate the scaling of emerging technological solutions and support their breakthrough.

A holistic approach to sustainability, based on quantitative methods, is essential. In addition to determining the potential of potential applications, the environmental impacts caused throughout the entire life cycle are relevant as well. Within the project, Fraunhofer IBP is responsible for accompanying research on sustainability assessment for all joint projects under the BMFTR funding program “Quantum technology and photonic system solutions for challenges in environmental and climate protection, biodiversity, sustainable energy systems, and resource conservation”.

Status of the project

Fraunhofer IBP currently supports sustainability assessments of technical solutions in quantum technology and photonics for eight joint projects within the funding measure through:

  • Awareness-raising and communication activities
Introducing the joint research projects to methodologies and key questions in life cycle assessment and sustainability analysis of the developed technologies and applications.
  • Developing and implementing project formats for environmental assessment and potential analysis
Targeted support for the joint research projects, including final semi-quantitative potential analyses of the developed technologies and applications.
